The Euro Celebrates 20 Years Strong
The euro is one of the most important currencies in the world. Back in January of 1999, 11 countries from the European Union launched this shared currency. This year, the euro is celebrating 20 years of existence, and has come a long way since then!
History of the euro
When the euro first came about, it was an electronic currency. It was cashless and used by financial markets. After three years, euro banknotes and coins entered circulation. The European Central Bank now produces euros as the currency of 19 European countries, including Italy, France, and Spain.
How the euro benefits citizens
Over the past 20 years, the euro has been around, the average inflation rate has been lower and prices in the euro area have remained stable. In addition, the euro area has the second-best world-leading economy, in terms of GDP per person. More than 340 million Europeans use the euro, so it is a vital part of everyday life.
