Have you ever heard of wabi-sabi? It is a Japanese ideal that embraces impermanence which is perfectly embodied by cherry blossoms—one of Japan’s most beautiful sights. Catching the full bloom is a rare opportunity not to be missed.

Here are the best viewing spots for 2025:

But First, Follow the Forecast

While cherry blossoms appear for up to two weeks, the full bloom lasts only a few days and viewing prospects change depending on the location.

Cherry blossoms appear first in the southernmost islands of Okinawa between late January and early February. They then travel up through Kyushu in late March and onto Honshu around early April. Finally, they reach the northernmost island of Hokkaido in early May.

The Japan Meteorological Agency releases a cherry blossom forecast every year, showing the expected flowering dates for each territory.

Top Destinations

Many cities host Sakura (i.e., cherry blossom) festivals featuring food, performances, and evening illuminations. Here are the top places to attend the festivities:

3. Osaka

Osaka is another fantastic destination for cherry blossoms. Highlights include Osaka Castle Park, where blooms are set against a fortress backdrop, and Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park, home to over 1,000 cherry trees. Kema Sakuranomiya Park along the Okawa River is also perfect for walks and boat rides under the light pink trees, while Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine provides a traditional setting for the cherry blossoms.

Cash is King in Japan

Even though Japan is incredibly advanced technologically, cash is still the primary payment method. Credit cards and mobile wallets may not always be accepted, especially off the beaten path. Using cash is also more secure, as card skimming and fraud can be of concern.

Tipping is not part of Japanese culture and may be seen as rude. A simple "Arigatou gozaimasu" (meaning thank you very much) with a smile will suffice!
